The Nessler/Janssen farm dates back to Fred’s maternal grandfather, Fred Janssen and his father Ube' Janssen in the late 1800’s. Ube' Janssen began as a tenant farmer for the Scully Estates. His son, Frederick Martin Janssen, followed him in the farming and livestock operation. Fred Janssen raised Hereford cattle in the mid 50’s and 60’s. Fred Nessler raised cattle and swine throughout his life, and acquired Maine-Anjou cattle in 1988. He served for 12 years on the National Board of the Maine-Anjou Association and served as National President for three years.

In 2005 Fred and Elaine Nessler along with their daughter, Elizabeth, sought to re-start the family’s Hereford operation under the name Prairie Rose Cattle Company. Today, Prairie Rose Cattle Company has approximately 100 females.

The Prairie Rose Cattle Company foundation females have their underpinning from GKB Cattle Company of Waxahachie, Texas. We offer a special thanks to Gary and Kathy Buchholz for all their assistance. GKB and Prairie Rose own approximately 14 foundation donors in partnership. Prairie Rose Cattle Company recently acquired the bull, CHAC MASON and GKB has obtained

an interest in that prominent herd sire. Prairie Rose Cattle Company, GKB Cattle Company, and Purple Reign Cattle Company, also own Down Town Avenue, the 2012 Illinois State Fair Grand Champion horned bull, as well, as the 2012 reserve National Champion bull at the Fort Worth Stock Show.
